Teaching a Mistreated Dog to Trust
You may often come across a dog that has been mistreated at some time in his life. These dogs are tough to handle because the things humans do every day give them worry and terror. With a few basic modifications in approach and a lot of patience, you can improve your chances of training a mistreated dog to trust. Bend down while dealing with this dog to look less intimidating. Keep your voice low and cheery while speaking with him. A loud or irritated tone will frighten him. Call him to you rather than approaching him. Praise him if he makes an attempt to comply. Don't wait for him to entirely comply. Remember that he may be used to being struck while approaching someone. When you do get to touch this dog, try not to pet his head.
